Camera Nerd.
My visual storytelling journey began at age 10. An extended family member gifted me a box of “stuff.” Amongst the trinkets and old baseball cards was a camera. And as I would come to learn, not just any camera but a classic Nikon F and a Nikkor, “Nifty 50!” That camera ignited my passion for image making and a life long love affair with cameras. I spent my high school and college years either holding or standing behind a camera. After college, I chased my passion over two decades all over the world as a broadcast videographer working with all of the major TV networks documenting everything from the World Series, to the Super Bowl, to the PGA Tour, to the Olympics, to Sen. John Glenn’s triumphant return to infinity and beyond in 1995. Each assignment deepened my understanding of visual storytelling, helped me gain technical skills, and understand the human connection stories can create. But at forty and weary of the freelance gypsy life, I found my true calling in teaching and sharing my storytelling passion with high school and university students. I've learned that teaching the camera arts goes far beyond technical skills. It's about helping individuals discover their “eye” for telling their personal stories. As my dear friend and colleague, Matt Tullis used to say, “Stories Can Saves Us.” My goal with the Photo Lab is to ease fears, dispel myths, foster creativity and form a community to guide learners of all skill levels through photography and videography fundamentals. To cultivate aspiring imagemaker’s artistic vision and motivate them to tell their own stories. I created the Photo Lab to help you begin or continue your camera journey. Every great image or video tells a story; I'm honored and excited to help you uncover, create, and share yours.
